so I guess this is growing up....

I think the Ataris said it best... "Being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up, these are the best days of our lives."

I'll be the first to admit that I had a hard time growing up. By growing up, I mean not being in college and having a 9-5(or in my case 8:30-5:30). I didn't want to graduate college. I broke down and cried about it. I tried to postpone it. I knew the end was coming and I wasn't at all prepared.

"You'll love being a grown up. Won't you be excited to have money after you graduate? You can buy the nice things you've always wanted" Every adult in my life said. "I'm so envious, you're going to be at the peak of your life!" said others. Then there were the "I wish I could be in your shoes and do it all again!" idiots.

I've technically been a "grown up" since May 2007. However, I didn't get my first "real job" (I don't consider working at a bar my first adult job) until October that year. So in my opinion, I've only been an adult 14 months.

I feel like all of the adults before me pulled the wool over my eyes. They flat out lied to my face. So I've decided to compile a list of reasons why being an adult blows:

1. The money everyone talks about? Still waiting for it. I knew that some money would be taken away for taxes, but I didn't expect it to be THAT much. Had I known I would be taxed so high I would have asked for more money.

2. Those nice things? They're few and far between. See 1 for further clarification.

3. The problems are so much bigger. It's no longer "Oh shit, I don't have an outfit to wear out tonight" it's more "Oh shit, I don't have enough money to eat!"

4. Working every day sucks. I want a snow day. One I don't have to make up. And one that I get paid for.

5. It's flat out depressing when I think that I'll be working 5 days a week (at least) for approximately the next 40 years. Unless I get lucky and win the lottery. Again, see number 1 because I can't even afford the effing ticket.

6. I have to dress up. By dressing up every day, it sucked the fun right out of it. I used to love it. Now I have no desire to ever see a skirt or dress pants again. And screw heels.

7. I have to go to bed early unless I want to drag at work and be a total bitch. I miss staying up until 4am. If I do this now then my schedule is off for at least a week.

8. I'm still waiting on that amazing apartment and loving my job part.

The only things I do have: A great relationship, satisfying sex and wonderful friends. So I guess although I don't have everything, I do have the things that matter.

Did people do this to you too?

<3,
Rose

My dad always said "You have to do what you love" ... and boy was he ever right. There's got to be your niche job out there if you don't love what you're doing right now (which sounds like it's the case).

I loved my 2nd job out of college. I left it to raise my children though. After ten years of not working, I now have a second career I enjoy and can control the schedule of. It doesn't pay as well though, but I still like getting out of the house and getting paid for it!

I don't remember people telling me the things you heard, but I graduated from college almost 20 years ago! I do remember my rather uneducated extended family thinking I would automatically be rich because I would get a job using a college degree! WRONG (about the rich part).

I totally get what your saying. Only I am still in college, I haven't had the opportunity to go to school FT, which sux. I feel like I am missing out in a bunch.

And the $$$ wow, that sux. I work 2 jobs and still barley have $$ for food. My weekend getaway only cost me $50 and it was a months worth of not buying much food, not driving much, and no bars. It was hard.

I keep hoping one day it will all be worth it. But when is that fuckin day.

When you find urs let me know. I am curious.

Seriously! These things are so true, and nobody prepares you for it. That math class? what the hell did that prepare me for?? There needs to be a common sense/real world class!

And as for #6, I dressed up for about 3 weeks and now I look like a shlump everyday, when I used to be a cute dresser. I swear work turns us into drones!

Good post :)

Oh my God. I'm so glad you wrote this blog! I'm so tired of my friends who have little part time jobs and an incredible social life and the luxury of college classes...who keep complaining that they wished they had graduated already ! HELLO people..it's the real world out there..it's scary...and sometimes is sucks! I miss college. I really do love my job, but I really miss my college "problems." My friend complains all the time because he has such a sucky sucky life...he lives with his parents in a HUGE house, works part time, drives a new car, and is going to school. Seriously? Not that I want to live with my parents, but I can think of LOTS of worse things..hehe! Sorry, I just went off! :)

I know how you're feeling, and I felt the same way the second I got out of university and started working. The key is to find something you love doing, and everything else will fall into place ;)

Definitely find something you'd do for free...like watch TV and comment on it....and figure out how to get paid for it! :)

I had the opposite experience regarding the "grown up" pep talks. My parents and older friends and family would all tell me...enjoy being carefree now...once you start paying your own way...you pay in more ways than one! :) I've tried to pass that on to the young people in my life...but none of them believe me until the first credit card bill comes in. Then I just have to laugh.:)

You are going to do just fine!

If nothing else...you have an absolutely killer blog! Love it. I'm going to follow!

Haha you are so right on. Where is all that MONEY that everyone keeps talking about?? I'm confused.

Then you get laid-off and it is even more depressing. I wish I was still in college fucking around like an idiot and didn't have to worry about anything except cramming for my next test.

I've been telling my kids that they have it made right now with no worries except for school papers and tests. And that's for only 9 months out of the year. The great thing about being a grownup is having your own place the way you want it. I hope things become more enjoyable for you. There really are great things about being an adult!

I wholeheartedly agree!! Especially on counts 1, 6, and 7. Teaching this early (and in heels) is obnoxious. I only wish I was a guy teacher, and could teach in cargo shorts and running shoes.

I won't even start on the fact that California is bankrupt and I might start getting IOUs instead of paychecks...

I completely agree.....seriously, I am so sick of wearing "dress up" clothes constantly. I look like a homeless person on the weekends because I simply cannot stand one more day of playing dress up (if we're not going anywhere, I rarely put on make-up either).

While I do like making money and being able to go and do as I please, life was SO much easier in college. At the time though, I was so ready to get out of there and get married, have a killer awesome job, a gorgeous home, etc.........yeah....not that easy. That's okay though, I guess it's not supposed to be easy (DAMN IT!).

:-)
